Waterbearing / Chirurgeonate
Emergency First Aid
There will be first aid available at Quad War. First aiders, called
Chirurgeons, will provide modern first aid at the level of standard first
aid only. This first aid will be provided free of charge to all who request
it and is done in the spirit of the Good Samaritan laws or equivalent. Any
illness or injury that requires a skill level above and beyond that of basic
first aid will be referred to advance medical care, outside the SCA.
The symbol of the Chirurgeons is the fleam, a medieval bloodletting device.
Members of the Chirurgeonate include Red Cross or St. John Ambulance-trained
first aid volunteers, medical professionals, paramedics, nurses and St. John
Ambulance volnuteers. Whatever their everyday experience, they all have
satisfied the SCA that they are familiar with providing first aid within the
cultural context of the SCA.
What Should I Do If I Need Emergency Assistance?
When you attend SCA events, and have a first aid kit available in your
encampment, you’ll probably be able to treat small camping incidents
yourself.
If you want or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to seek out a member
of the event staff to have a chirurgeon called.
You may drive yourself to a medical facility of your own volition. A small
list of medical facilities appear at the bottom of this page.
Please have a list of all your medications, including prescription and non-presciption
medications.
ALL Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. THE SCA CANNOT
TREAT MINORS WITHOUT THE CONSENT OF A PARENT OR LEGAL GUARDIAN. Treatment
cannot begin until the parent is present, unless the minor is experiencing a
life-threatening emergency.
Carry completed a copy of the Medical Authorization Form AND proof of
Temporary Guardianship with you at all times if you are serving as guardian
for someone else’s minor. The chirurgeons cannot treat the child/minor
without seeing this paperwork.
