Welcome To Their Highnesses’ University of Avacal (THUA) for Quad War AS XLIII (2008)
The following is a course schedule and course descriptions for
classes that will be offered at Quad War this year. Please note that classes
may be added, cancelled or rescheduled until the very last minute, so check
back here often. Also, we will have a class board outside the THUA
Registration area for you to check upon daily for these changes. Pre-registration is now closed but you can still sign up for classes at the event. Once classes are full, you will be put on a waiting list.
Not everyone who signs up for classes show up for them so there is still a very
good chance you will be able to take your class. Just show up at the beginning
of the class and check with the instructor. E-mail confirmations of registration will be sent within a few days of
receipt.
Locations: There will be several places set up for classes. They
will be indicated by colored flags. Make sure to check the THUA Course
Calendar available at Gate for where your class will be taught.
Fees: There is NO registration fee for THUA
classes. However, some classes have a fee associated in order for the
instructors to cover the cost of materials provided.
Hours of Operation during Quad War: The THUA Registration
desk will be staffed from 8am to 6pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the war.
This is where you can come to register and pay for classes. For those
who pre-registered, THUA will have sheets for each student tallying total
fees due. You can also pay your instructor directly for your classes.
Special Note: THUA will have a bell and the staff will ring
the bell every hour on the hour from 9am until 5pm to help all involved keep
track of time.
THUA Records: Class attendance is taken at all THUA classes
and any people who haven't pre-registered must sign in. This is how
students get their THUA credits from taking THUA classes.
Reimbursements: If you paid for a THUA class and didn’t
attend, please come to the THUA registration desk after the scheduled time
of the class and we will refund you your fees. You may also
deregister at any time from the course and we’ll refund you then as well.
Please email HL Katelijne van der Ast at thua@avacal-sca.org
with any questions.

Participants must know how to read and follow instructions in
the Complete Anachronist issue on the topic. Lady Eve will be

the class everyone will make a small square of felt that can be used for
a potholder. Be prepared to get a little wet especially your hands and
forearms. These techniques can be applied to make larger, thicker
pieces to suit a multitude of purposes.
What Not to Wear: Anglo-Saxon and Viking edition by HL Zenovia
Kallipygia and HE Inga the Unfettered – NOT ON SCHEDULE AWAITING TIME CONFIRMATION
During the first 12 or so centuries AD, the basic clothing of a Northern European male consisted
of tunics and trousers, but the overall appearance was far from uniform at all times
and places. This show-and-tell style class will explore the materials, style details
and accessories necessary to convert the generic SCA clothing of two men into outfits
appropriate for the stylish 7th c. Anglo-Saxon warrior, and the sophisticated 10th c. Viking, using
primarily beginner to intermediate sewing skills. (A handout will be available by email after the event.) Ever wanted to join in a dance circle but weren’t quite sure
how to move your hips or what to do with your arms? The focus of this
class will be on basic “bread and butter” moves to prepare the student for any
drum circle or belly dance class and is ideal for those with little to
no dance experience. There will be a basic overview of
Middle Eastern garb: the “fake it till you make it” approach as
well as information on more period garb. The class will also introduce students to basic drum rhythms
and a variety of Middle Eastern cultures. This class will be
directly aimed at female dance technique. Students are asked to bring lots of water and to wear clothing
they are comfortable sweating in, as this will be a dance intensive
class. Modern work out clothing would be appropriate, pants recommended. What is it that sets dancers apart? Is it years of technical
training or the ability to relate to an audience? The purpose of this
class is to teach the art of the performance: engaging the audience, development of stage
presence, entrances, exits, and over-viewing the key components of
dance. The focus will be on layering movement and the development of a
performance persona. This class is ideal for students with some dance experience
(either within the SCA or in mainstream dance classes). This class
will be directly aimed at female dance technique.Students are asked to bring lots of water and to wear clothing

class. Modern work out clothing would be appropriate, pants recommended. Sometimes the best planned scribal projects can go awry -
missed words, misspelling, blobby paint or ink etc...but this doesn't
mean the project can't be saved. In this class I will cover some of my favourite and
best methods for dealing with scribal whoopsies. Have you always wanted to paint charters but didn't know where
to start? This class is for anyone who needs to know which end of the
paintbrush is up, and where paint can be hunted. Come and learn Avacal
standards for charter painting, medieval equivalences, basic brush
techniques, paint mixing, and general info. This is a hands-on class, so come
prepared to paint with gouache.
Learn how to weave wire to make a piece of
jewelry. Documentation will be available to view and website will be
provided to print it out at home. Come and learn the history of lampworking and basic beginner
techniques! Have fun making your own beads! Students will get hands on experience shaping beads as well as practicing stringer
application and control while creating beads suitable for the SCA.
This class uses modern torches and will employ open flame. Students should wear
clothing made out of natural fibres that can get dirty and/or singed,
hair must be tied back, sleeves must be tight or able to be pushed up. Students
will be able to pick up and take home any beads they made once they have
been cooled and cleaned. You've got the basics! You are the master of the round bead!
Now what? Come on by for a one hour demo on intermediate
lampworking techniques. We will cover the following, time allowing: Each participant will go home with a piece of amber that they
have shaped and polished themselves. IF time allows we will drill
the stones first so that they can string them and have a new necklace. We are
NOT using period tools or methods for this class. Students will begin a pierce-work pendant in brass with a
gryphon as the design. The class will include cutting a suitable
sized piece of brass from the instructor's stock, gluing the pattern onto the brass,
center- punching holes for mounting on a chain (chain to be provided by
student) and for cutting out the center design, filing, sanding, and buffing,
the pendant. Jewelry saws, blades, C clamps, bench pins, files,
sandpaper and buffing compounds provided by instructor. Saws will be available
for purchase after the class from the instructor at $25.00 each Students will learn the tools and their use in making a small
carved project. Come learn how to use a flint and steel to start a fire and
keep the flames going. Forage around to find nesting material, get set
and learn to burn...er…keep warm and cook stuff. This time the
instructor won’t burn down anything. :) NOTE: This
class is being held in the bardic pit area. Wax tablets, or writing tablets, are the medieval equivalent of
the modern PDA or notebook. Paper and vellum were expensive to
produce, and so a pair (or more) of tablets were coated with wax and written on
with a stylus. This allowed people to jot down their notes and
ideas before committing them permanently to the more expensive mediums of paper and
vellum. In this class, we will discuss the history of the wax
tablet, and learn how to make our own. Basic overview of persona development and why we bother to try
and figure all of this stuff out A general overview of the entire history of falconry from its
origins through to its modern practices. The course will touch on
how it affected the social, economic, and political structure of
various cultures across several periods, and will also examine the many
common words and phrases used today which began as falconry terms and have now
lost their original meanings. This is a lecture only as the
instructor is not licensed to practice falconry in AB and has no birds for a flight demo. A general overview of the entire history of falconry from its

delicious crumbly cheese that can be used in cooking or for just eating.
Students need to be comfortable around a stove, and not wear poufy or droopy
sleeves. Love the pageantry of the Middle Ages? Ever want to make
your own heraldic display for court, war and tournaments like Coronet?
Then this class is for you. Learn about heraldic display in Medieval
tournament and how you can easily incorporate it in your own arms. The evidence is overwhelming - simply by the number of people
in the world today - people had babies in the periods we recreate. And
while childbirth practices have definitely come a long way, midwifery
was much more advanced than modern medicine would like to believe. Come
learn a little about maternal and neonatal care in the medieval period.
There will be some frank discussion of topics that may make weaker
stomachs queasy. This title was shorter than "How to behave like a charming and
suave Cavalier". However, this course will teach you how to flirt like
its 1599! The course will cover proper protocols of SCA flirting, including
basic flattery, hand kissing, setting bounds, how to politely refuse
unwanted attention and the importance of good communications. Learn some history of pottery and learn the basic hand building
techniques. Or practice them if you already know them. Pieces will be
delivered back to their owners after firing. (Be sure to leave your name and
address with the instructor.) Make a willow melon basket.
A ribbed egg or melon basket is a traditional round basket. Learn how to make one, willow will be provided. An introduction to Hazard, Gluckhaus, and Shut the Box. Add a new skill to your tavern experience. Although these can be gambling games, no money
will be used. Each pupil will receive 25 tokens to use during the class. No age limit but must be able to count and add dice. Children will need parent’s
approval. NO loaded dice please. Lust. Gluttony. Pride. Sound like key ingredients of the Grotto party? Greed. Sloth. Wrath. Envy. Well, these are the Seven Sins considered in
the Middle Ages to be so severe that they alienate a person from the redemptive grace of God. The Seven Deadly Sins have become a standard in popular
literature and art, but I hope to delve the origins of this medieval conception of immorality, and rediscover its impact on the SCA-period zeitgeist.
After a long day of war, relax in the shade and listen to me lecture on the sources and implications of the anti-ideal of the Deadly Sins. Where did this all start and why is it still going on? Who is
that guy in the big, shiny crown? How did he get picked to be
king/prince/baron? Answers to these and many more questions will be covered in this fun
but information packed seminar. Current and future Seneschals are welcome to come and discover
the ins & outs of being a branch seneschal. Familiarize yourself with
SCA policy, when & how to fill in all those forms & dealing with conflict,
among other issues – all in a way that makes the office easier and more
enjoyable. There will be a question period at the end as well. Autocrating doesn't need to be overwhelming. With proper
planning and understanding of what's involved, it can be easy and
rewarding. We'll start looking at the must do items, then move on to ways to make your
events unique & memorable. An overview of what goes on behind the scenes of a retinue. This class will cover retinue roles & responsibilities,
interaction with Royalty, court considerations and any other retinue related topics that arise. While the instructor's
experience is primarily with Kingdom level courts the theory extends to Principality and Baronial levels. This class will teach children how to behave safely around
horses and the rules and etiquette of being in an equestrian area.
Please note that Parents/Guardians must be present for each child and this class
is being run in the Equestrian area. Each participant will go home with a piece of amber that they
